Welcome to the 2019 Field of Honor!
“Lest we forget!” – Joseph Rudyard Kipling
It is our unique privilege to honor those men and women who serve or have served in defense of our life and liberty. To this end, Merced Sunrise Rotary and Merced College are co-hosting the seventh annual “Field of Honor” in recognition of those who have volunteered to protect the freedom of our great nation.
There are many men and women from our community, from all walks of life, who have volunteered to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the lives of their fellow Americans. Our veterans defend our freedom from domestic threats and abroad, and our first responders protect our life, liberty, and property in our communities. The “Field of Honor” is one way of saying “Thank You” for the service they have provided on our behalf.
Merced Sunrise Rotary is grateful for the number of Community Sponsors who have supported us in honoring those individuals whose lives are represented by each flag flown on the Field. For instance, it is thanks to the sponsorship of the Merced School Employees Federal Credit Union that eighth-grade students from Merced City Schools have the opportunity to study the history associated with this event, our veterans, and first responders. They tour the Field, learn about our community heroes, and experience how we, as a community, honor those who sacrifice on our behalf.
We invite you to join us in a walk through our Field, to read about our honorees, and to learn more about our flag’s history. Help us to honor those who have pledged their life in service to our great country!
The “Field of Honor” will be open from Saturday, November 9th through Saturday, November 16th. Opening ceremonies will be at 2:00 pm on November 10th; the day before Veteran’s Day and the Marine Corps 244th Birthday. Closing Ceremonies will take place on November 16th at 2:00 pm, after which participants may pick up their flags. Merced Sunrise Rotary is also planning a flag retirement ceremony on Wednesday, November 13th at 6:45 pm for those needing to retire worn, old flags in an appropriate manner.
We hope you will participate in honoring our heroes through the “Field of Honor”, and that you take an opportunity to tour the Field!
