Flag Retirement Ceremony

This being the 12th year of the Merced Field of Honor it is fitting that we consider and address the disposition of flags that have flown and have become worn over the years.  Many individuals have taken their flags home and display them throughout the year and we have noticed that some flags come back to the Merced Field of Honor are getting to the point that they be retired following the guidelines set forth to properly dispose of worn flags.  The U.S. Flag code states that, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”  Thus, when a flag is torn and tattered beyond repair, it’s time for it to be retired.

On Thursday, November 14th, 2024 at dusk (6:30 pm), a Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held on the Merced Field of Honor.  Local Scout troops and local veterans will be conducting the ceremony.  Come join us for this time-honored tradition.
